With each issue, I think it can't get any better but February issue was without a doubt the best issue ever! Makes me so proud to call NC home and makes me proud to be a long time subscriber of Our State.

A response to "Homage to a Sauce" by Cecilia Budd Grimes. I read the fond memories you shared with Our State Magazine. Boar and Castle Sauce was purchased by Thomas Gourmet Foods and (I have been told) can be found at FRESH MARKET http://carolinasauce.stores.yahoo.net/boandcasa.html. Long live The Castle!

We have been reading and enjoying Our State Magazine for many years and use it a lot to plan our vacations around North Carolina and really enjoy Bob Gardner’s recipes and travels to all the great restaurants around our state. Recently we purchased a new RV and we always keep the latest copy of Our State to read with us. We were wondering why we have never seen an article about the state’s campgrounds? With all the great campgrounds in our state most within high tourist areas it seems like it would make a good story. Keep making your great magazine!

I won the email contest that was a two night stay at The Esmeralda Inn. My husband and I have just returned from that trip. I would like to thank everyone at Our State and the Esmeralda. That was one of the most relaxing weekends that we have ever had. The staff at the inn was exceptional and the views from the room were unbelievable. The first thing I noticed was the attention to detail. When we first entered the room the Bose radio was playing soft music and the window was ajar so that we could hear the stream that was just outside. Anyone thinking of visiting the Chimney Rock area should stay at The Esmeralda Inn. You will not be disappointed. Thanks again for a wonderful weekend.

Your January issue was wonderful. When I started reading the magazine and saw the picture of Buchanan's Store. I yelped with delight. For many years I went to my best friend's cottage at Kerr Lake. Buchanan's Store is right down the road from the lake cottage. It wouldn't be a trip to the lake without stopping at Buchanan's.

The amazing thing is that my friend's sister was traveling from Maryland to SC over the holidays. On a whim she took the Manson Road exit in NC just to take a look at the family cottage that had been sold several years ago. Before heading onto the intestate she made a stop at Buchanan's. She purchased all her nephew's favorite candies that the children would buy during their summer visits at the lake. The kids are in their twenties now but when they opener their gifts containing the "penny candies" they KNEW their aunt had made a stop at Buchanan's. I also purchased extra issues of Our State magazine and mailed a copy to each family member.

Thank you so much for Stored Memories!!!!!

Sometimes it's nice just to say "thank-you.” With that said, your magazine continues to bring out the best in North Carolina. Happy 75 years, with many more years to come.

I grew up in Durham, NC, attended UNCCH and left NC after grad school in 1980. I have since lived in 7 states, 16 cities/towns and about 30 different residences. My older sister, Sandra Davis (Mocksville, NC) gives me the annual subscription for Our State as a Christmas present each year. Like so many displaced Tarheels, I have a warm place in my heart for UNC and my home state in general. I look forward to Our State every month. I recognize names, sites, scenery and customs. It really helps me stay connected even though I live in southern Illinois (Saluki land).

I grew up in Winston-Salem and love getting Our State. Brings back many, many memories. I loved the “Stored Memories” article of old-timey stores. It brought back memory of working at Ronnie's Country store (then W. G. White). I was the door boy at Christmas in the mid 60's. I opened the door and greeted each and every customer. I also remember grocery shopping at the old original store with my grandpa, L.B. Mock. I can still see the store in my mind....all the hams hanging. I am glad Ronnie's is carrying on the tradition.
